Notes from Artist Christopher Clark:
Alice encounters herself in the Looking Glass - but which Alice is real, and which is the reflection?
• Changes in outfit accessories on each Alice: ribbon in hair, necklace and earring, buckle on her shoes, general coloring of course
• "Nice" Alice is holding a pocket watch, about to strike 13. "Evil" Alice is holding a skull. We can make up some cool symbolic meaning for this which I'm sure people will love. It's there somewhere, I just haven't articulated it yet :)
• The pocket watch is actually my dad's that he gave me years ago, I still wear it whenever I wear one of his old vests/waistcoats. It's normal size of course, not enlarged like in the painting.
• The flowers have faces that reflect each other, happy/jovial on one side, sad/evil/dead on the other
• Same thing with the clouds at the bottom - faces that reflect each other
• The Caterpillar is in each bottom corner, blowing smoke from his hookah. This smoke is what makes up the clouds that the Alice's are standing on. So this whole concept could be the Caterpillar's dream or something?
• The Wonderland that's in the background of each side is consistent with the mood of the Alice: on the right it's warm, bright, glowy, soft edges. On the left it's cold, dead, hard edges.
• Steampunk and clock texture in background, done with copper leaf.
• The archway of the mirror is done in an Art Nouveau style, with copper leaf. If you turn the painting upside down, this archway is actually the Cheshire Cat's grin, and his eyes are hidden in the trees on each side of the mirror.
• Within this archway are written the words "WE'RE ALL MAD HERE", also visible upside-down.
• Even my signature (in the upper corners) is written normally and reflected on the other side.
